Alpine, oil on wood panel, Weir Family Home, London, Ontario. 2016
This painting was developed with the home owners specific desires to address a 17 foot high wall along their staircase. Over the span of a year I shared my artistic process closely with the family. We exchanged ideas and a vision for the space. I completed several conceptual study paintings as well as devised various compositions using multi-panel designs. I sought out their vision and combined it with some experimentation and presented different painting styles. This culminated into the final version, a colourful, bold and dramatic 10 panel work that has activated their front entrance to their home.
Field research for a commission
To prepare myself to paint a large commission painting, I requested a site visit with my client. My mission was to create a few paintings from life and spend some time with my client to get to know them and why this site holds deep meaning to them. The information I gather on such a trip helps connect me to the site and my client, translating into deeper meaning when I get to work in the studio.
